In case you’ve encountered the issue with “Partially paid” orders, this article will:

  • Explain the reasons why it happens

  • Show you how to resolve it

What is a partially paid order?

The Partially paid status of an order means there has been a payment to fulfill a portion of the total amount.

Why does this happen?

When a customer adds a post-purchase upsell product to the existing order but the payment for it fails, Shopify will still add the product to the order regardless of the payment failing.

Unfortunately, the "Partially paid" issue is caused by a limitation that exists in the Shopify API. This means that Vanga AI and other apps using the post-purchase API cannot solve the issue unless Shopify changes the API.

Important note: This case can only happen with the post-purchase upsells. Cart upsells and Thank You page upsells cannot cause the “partially paid” issue.

How to resolve “Partially paid” orders in Shopify?

This entire process between the payment and the item being added to the order takes places entirely on the Shopify platform and Vanga AI has no control over it.

This means the only course of action is to get in touch with the customer who made the order and settle the payment manually. In case this is not possible, simply remove the unpaid item from the order and notify the customer.
